Guess My Rule: Rectangles

A red circle and a blue circle overlap. Inside the red circle: a 4 cm by 5 cm rectangle. A 2 cm by 7 cm rectangle. A 2 cm by 2 cm square. Inside the blue circle: a 5 cm by 5 cm square. A 3 cm by 7 cm rectangle. In the overlapping area: a 5 cm by 3 cm rectangle and a 1 cm by 3 cm rectangle. Outside the circles: a 2 cm by 12 cm rectangle.
  1. Some rectangles belong in the circles, and some do not. What is the rule to be in the red circle? What is the rule to be in the blue circle? What is the rule to be in both of the circles?
  2. Where would you place a square that measures 3 cm on each side?
  3. Draw another shape that belongs in only the blue circle.
  4. Draw another shape that belongs in the intersection of the two circles.
  5. Draw another shape that doesn’t belong in either circle.

What do you notice about the areas of the rectangles?

Make your own rule using rectangles and their measurements. You can use the circles below or draw your own.

If possible, show some examples that belong inside each circle and some examples that don’t belong in either circle.
