Math in Our World: Street Map

Olivia lives in Gridville. Below is a map of the town. Olivia has a hard time remembering where her favorite places are. To help her remember, Olivia finds the product of the intersecting roads closest to places she visits often. Olivia’s school is near an intersection that has a product of 49.

The Gridville map is a 10 block by 10 block array. Each horizontal line is a street, labeled 1st through 11th. Each vertical line is an avenue, labeled 1st through 11th. A diagonal line from top left to bottom right is Q Drive. A diagonal line from bottom left to top right is K Lane.
  1. Use pictures, models, or numbers to show what is happening.
  2. What do you notice? What do you wonder?
  3. What mathematical questions can you ask about this situation? Answer all the questions you can!
  • Where is Olivia’s school? How do you know?
  • Olivia’s favorite game store is located at a product of 36. Where could it be?

Show your work to someone else, and explain your thinking. Did they understand?
Ask whether they have any other questions you can answer!

  • Some products describe more than one intersection. What could Olivia do to help her remember which intersection each product belongs to?
  • What memory aids have you used to help you remember things? How could you use math to help you remember numbers like your address or phone number?
