Math in Our World: Block Towers

Hayden's block tower has a small triangle and a trapezoid as the top. It has 9 blocks in all. 3 red, 3 blue, 2 yellow, and 1 green. Hayden used some blocks to make the tower tall, and some to make the tower wide. Charlotte's block tower has a large triangle as the top. It has 6 blocks in all. 1 red, 2 green, 2 yellow, and 1 blue. Charlotte used the blocks to make the tower tall, but none to make the tower wide.

On a cold winter day, Hayden and Charlotte decided to build block towers.

  1. What do you notice? What do you wonder?
  2. Use pictures, numbers, or math words to show or tell what you know about the blocks.
  3. What math questions can you ask about the picture? Answer all the questions you can!
  • How could you compare the block towers?
  • What do you notice about the colors and shapes of the blocks?

Show your work to someone else, and explain your thinking. Did they understand?
Ask whether they have any other questions you can answer!

What could you build with this many blocks? Draw a picture or build something with toys in your home.
